It’s 50 years since the launch of the first local commercial radio station in the UK and despite predictions to the contrary, radio is enjoying a golden age.
LBC and Capital Radio were first on the air in London swiftly followed by Piccadilly Radio and Radio City in Manchester and Liverpool respectively. It was great to meet some of the people who’ve been involved with the sector over the last 50 years at a special reception in Parliament that I hosted recently as well as hearing from broadcasters like Nick Ferrari and Secretary of State for Culture Media and Sport Lucy Frazer.
Parliament is currently legislating to ensure radio remains available to all into the future as new ways of accessing stations via smart speakers become increasingly popular. You can read a little more about that work here: https://www.politicshome.com/thehouse/article/securing-golden-age-radio…
