Warrington South MP Andy Carter has welcomed the Department for Transport’s confirmation that Warrington Borough Council is set to receive funding from the Government’s Local EV Infrastructure (LEVI) Fund Pilot, which was launched earlier in March this year.
Warrington is one of nine local authorities to be successful in securing the funding, which will total £695,660. The project will deliver 105 public electric vehicle charging points and related infrastructure, supporting the equitable rollout of electric vehicle charging infrastructure in the borough.
Commenting on the announcement, Andy Carter MP said: “This is fantastic news that Warrington has been successful in our bid for funding from the LEVI Pilot. As more drivers make the switch to electric vehicles, it’s key that we have in place the charging network to support this transition. The rollout of the LEVI scheme will be a major boost to improving air quality for our town by helping reduce emissions, as well as supporting green jobs throughout the UK.
“In Warrington South we still have many areas which are lacking electric vehicle charging points altogether. I’ll be engaging with the Borough Council to push for these new charging points to be placed in areas like our public car parks where drivers will benefit most from them.”
The initial £10million portfolio of projects for the LEVI Pilot will deliver over one thousand charging points and leverage nearly £9million in private investment. It will also provide key learnings and information to support the design of the full £450million LEVI scheme, due to launch next year.
Alongside this, the On-street Residential Chargepoint fund will continue to run, which has seen nearly 2,900 EV charging points installed so far, with funding provided for approaching 10,000 additional charging points in the future.
