Quite a few people have been in touch to ask about progress on repair work on the Sankey Canal, so I’ve been to have a look at the recently completed repairs to the canal walls, repairs to lock gates and the lock wall by Warrington Council. A temporary pumping operation is in place to maintain the water levels with the lock gates closed holding water on the Warrington stretch
Last autumn Myself and Derek Twigg MP met with both Warrington and Halton Borough Council to talk about the future of the canal. Since then, Halton Borough Council have commissioned a condition survey for its length of the canal where major work is needed.
As expected the survey showed that much of the supporting walls are in need of repair or repointing. It also highlighted the issue of vegetation and the damage that it is doing.
The first steps to remove vegetation will begin shortly and a work plan is now being drawn up to begin re-pointing over a number of years, the first phase beginning in the summer 2023.
Nice place to stop off for a drink at the Ferry Tavern too!
