This morning I visited United Utilities Sewage Treatment Plant on Gatewarth Industrial Eastate, which treats up to 143miillion litres of waste water per day produced by a population of 318,000 from the Warrington area and beyond.
The site does everything from preliminary screening, rag and grit removal to using biological processes to clean the water, before discharging back into the river Mersey and pumping sludge to other sites for processing.
I looked at the steps being taken to end storm discharges which are now fully monitored. Local residents have raised concerns in relation to unpleasant smells impacting nearby homes and it was helpful to see what steps UU are taking to minimise odours, working with the Council and Environment Agency.
I look forward to continuing to work with UU in the months ahead to ensure high water quality in our local areas
