Early meeting with the Prime Minister to discuss the issues you’ve raised with me.
We discussed new legislation which will stop small boat crossings – as he promised to do when he laid out our five priorities at the start of the year.
Previous bills have made progress on gripping this problem, and what he will announce today takes that work forward. It will mean that those who come here on small boats can’t claim asylum here.
I know this is an issue many local people feel strongly about, we are a compassionate nation and we support genuine cases where families are fleeing from persecution. But we need to break the business model of criminal gangs who are putting lives at risk to come here.
