Last week I spoke in a debate in Parliament looking at reform of the leasehold system, a topic which is relevant locally because Warrington South has one of the highest number of newly built leasehold properties in England.
I took the opportunity to praise the Government for the steps taken so far but also asked the Minister to go further, ending the sale of leasehold altogether, switching to commonhold where there are jointly held amenities and allowing all leaseholders to be able to secure their freehold.
I’ve raised my concerns previously about the behaviour of some solicitors who were recommended by developers who then failed to act in the best interest of homebuyers. I also urged the Competition and Markets Authority to look at settling individual issues which still remain outstanding following their inquiry into mis-selling such as those on Steinbeck Grange in Chapelford.
